The 606 Elevated Trail Run or Ride
Running · Elevated greenway · Chicago
A former rail corridor transformed into a 2.7-mile elevated greenway with neighborhood access ramps, art, and sunset views.
Chicago's lakefront does the heavy lifting — 18 miles of continuous trail along Lake Michigan, plus an elevated rail-trail through the Northwest Side. The two entries that break the pattern are a restored industrial marsh with BMX and singletrack, and Cowles Bog in Indiana Dunes, which is far harder than its 4.7 miles suggests.
Continuous lakefront path and beaches, an elevated former rail corridor, restored industrial wetland, a connected lagoon system for paddling, and real dune country to the southeast.
Spring through fall for the trail and riding surfaces; spring and fall migration is the reason to visit Montrose Point at all. Wet-trail closures apply at Big Marsh.
Cowles Bog Trail to Lake Michigan — closures, seasonal access, or hazards worth reading before you commit to the trip.
Sorted by time needed, shortest first.
