Seward Park Shoreline and Old-Growth Loop
Walking · Old-growth forest · Seattle
A paved shoreline circuit with optional upland detours into one of Seattle's rare old-growth forest remnants.
Seattle is unusual in how much of its good walking is inside the city — Discovery Park alone is 534 acres of meadow, bluff, and Puget Sound shoreline. The one genuine mountain objective in this set, Rattlesnake Ledge, sits out toward North Bend and is the only listing here with serious cliff exposure.
Coastal bluffs and beaches on the Sound, ravine forest and salmon creeks in the north, old-growth remnants on Lake Washington, and a flat rail-trail spine across the north of the city.
Most of these work year-round in the right gear. Carkeek is best in fall for salmon viewing, and Rattlesnake Ledge needs weather-appropriate preparation in any season.
